Erica Carter introduces this classic semi-fictional essay on Berlin life. Menschen am Sonntag brought together the remarkable talents of Curt and Robert Siodmak, Edgar Ulmer, Billy Wilder and Fred Zimmermann, as well as a cast of lay actors, to produce a memorable swan song for German silent film. Three years later, the filmmakers would be in exile and the carefree pleasures of a lazy Berlin Sunday would have become a distant memory. The film recalls and memorializes this moment of social and artistic transition as part of the ongoing BFI programme, Big Screen Classics.
